Chichen Itza, Mexico

CHICHEN ITZA (Chee-chehn eet-sah) , The Yucatan Peninsula’s best known and most visited ruins, are the remains of a great Maya city and one of the archaeological wonders of the world.

Richly carved pyramids, temples and shrines cover a 3.75-square-mile area. Of the several hundred buildings believed to occupy the site, only about 30 have been fully restored. A few remain as they were found, and the rest are hidden under rough, underbrush-covered mounds in the tick jungle scrub of the north-central Yucatan Peninsula
It is believed that Chichen Itza was founded sometime around A.D. 435. After being abandoned for an undetermined length of time, it was rediscovered and firmly established as an important ceremonial center by the Izae (also know as the Putun Maya), a Maya-speaking tribe who migrated from what is now the state of Tabasco.

EL CASTILLO (THE CASTLE) is unforgettable. This pyramid, also called KUKULKAN dominates the other ruins sprinkled over a level, grassy area. Its perfectly symmetrical design incorporates the sophisticated Maya calendar, also a natural phenomenon occurs at the spring and fall equinoxes (on around March 21st and September 21st), as the sun begins its descents, the shadows cast by the terrace in the north staircase from the body of a serpent whose actual sculpted head rests at the base of the stairs. In the spring, the serpent appears to be slithering down the stairs, in the fall, the illusion is reversed.

Other beautiful places in the archaeological site are: THE BALL COURT, THE TEMPLE OF THE JAGUARS, THE TEMPLE OF THE SKULLS, PLATAFORM OF THE EAGLESAND JAGUARS, PLATAFORM OF VENUS, TEMPLE OF THE WARRIORS, CHAC MOOL, THE SACRED CENOTE, THE OSSUARY, EL CARACOL, CENOTE XTOLOC, CASA DE LAS MONJAS (NUNNERY), LA IGLESIA (THE CHURCH), TEMPLO DE LOS TABLEROS ESCULPIDOS (TEMPLE OF THE CARVED PANELS), AKAB-DZIB, CHICHEN VIEJO (OLD CHICHEN) and HOUSE OF THE PHALLI
NEARBY DESTINATIONS: GRUTAS DEBALANCANCHE (BALANCANCHE CAVES), VALLADOLID (COLONIAL CITY), TIZIMIN (COLONIAL CITY WITH CONVENTS AND CHURCHS), RIO LAGARTOS (FLAMINGO SANCTUARY), KINICH KAKMO PYRAMID and IZAMAL(THE YELLOW CITY WITH LIGHT AND SOUND SHOW).
